Garuda Airlines is a joint venture between the Government of Indonesia with the Dutch airline Luchtvaart Koninklijke Maatschappij (KLM). At first, the Indonesian government has a 51% stake and for the first 10 years, the company is managed by KLM. Then on December 28, 1949, there was a flight of historic namely the DC-3, registered PK-DPD-owned KLM Interinsulair fly to bring the President Soekarno  of Yogyakarta to Kemayoran – Jakarta for his inauguration as President of the Republic of Indonesia (RIS) with the new logo, Garuda Indonesian Airways, the name given to the company’s President Soekarno  of this first flight.

Starting from the aircraft maiden flight in 1949, Garuda Airlines, formerly named Garuda Indonesian Airways, began to develop its fleet. This device allows passengers to choose a wide variety of entertainment such as movies, television programs, music videos and games. On February 1, 2011, GIAA obtained the effective statement from BAPEPAM-LK to perform GIAA Initial Public Offering (IPO) to the public as much as 6.335.738.000 Series B shares with a nominal value of Rp500,- per share, at an offering price of Rp750,- per stock. These shares were listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) on 11 February 2011.
