Carlos Slim Helu is a businessman who came from Mexico. He is also the CEO of a company engaged in the field of telecommunications, namely Telefonos de Mexico, Telcel and América Móvil. In 2013, he was named as the richest man in the world by Forbes Magazine.

Carlos Slim was born on January 28, 1940, in Mexico City. Slim name is taken from the middle name of his father, Julian Slim Haddad, while Helu name taken from the name of his mother, Linda Helu.

He was the youngest of six children. His parents named Julián Slim Haddad and Linda Helú, both from Lebanon. At the end of the 19th century his parents migrated to Mexico and setting up an Arab-language magazine dedicated to the Lebanese-Mexican community.

In 1952, his father died. Carlos who at that time had the title of civil engineer after graduating from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1961. He also taught Algebra and Linear Programming. He also briefly taught at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Carlos married to Soumaya Domit in 1967. From that marriage he has three children, named Carlos Slim Domit, Marco Antonio Slim Domit and Patrick Slim Domit. The third of these children take responsibility for the sustainability of the company he leads.


In 1990, when the company in the field of telecommunications, namely Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) in less good condition, Carlos bought from the government by cooperating with Southwestern Bell Corp. and France Telecom. He improved telephone service in Mexico, with a bid in the form of a local connection, telephone directory, long distance, mobile, and internet.

His efforts and improved services Telmex eventually become a largest telecommunications company in Mexico, not only that, Telmex noted as one of the respected company on the New York Stock Exchange.

Carlos is the vice Chairman of the Mexican Stock Exchange and Chairman of the company’s Mexican Association of Brokerage Houses. He also became the first president in the company’s New York Stock Exchange Administration Council who served in 1996 and 1998.

In 2000, Carlos made a firm that aims to save the city of Mexico and save those who are less fortunate to have a better quality of life which he named, namely Mexico City Historic Downtown Foundation. He is the figure behind the financial development in Mexico. He was named the best employers in Mexico when she was 28 years old.
